More About Us
THIS PAGE IS PARTIALLY FINISHED; HOWEVER, A FEW AREAS ARE UNDER CONSTRUCTION AS THE WEBSITE IS BEING WORKED ON
Education
We educate our members and others with expert presentations at our monthly meetings and engagement with a number of other organizations on the challenges to preserve our cold water fisheries.
Most importantly, SRTU supports over two dozen schools for the Trout in the Classroom program to help youth understand the significance of cold water fisheries by providing fish tanks so youth can witness the progression of trout from eggs to a stream side release.
Conservation
Our chapter members are very involved with conservation efforts on our home water and other cold water fisheries throughout South Carolina. We participant in population monitoring with the SC Dept. of Natural Resources and the US Forest Service. Additionally, we sponsor and participate in clean up days in many cold water streams and rivers. Our most consistent clean up activity is along the Saluda Riverwalk Park in Columbia.
Restoration
Beyond conservation, we support projects that restore streams to their natural habitat. We provide both labor and financial support to survey culverts and replace them when they are a barrier for migrating fish or working with land owners to remove ponds that are near native fish headwaters to promote the survival of our native Brooke trout.
Engagement
SRTU engages with a wide variety of organizations and programs, singularly, on our home water (Lower Saluda River) or in concert with the SC TU State Council on many other SC coldwater fisheries. Some of the programs and organizations we work with include the following:
